I recently got into venture capital (VC) and wanted to examine the investment decisions made by some of the top VC firms in US and China (the two largest markets for VCs) post Jan 20, 2020 (sort of post pandemic) to help me better understand who's investing in what from a bird's eye view.
I determined which VCs are generally the best VCs in US and China from investor recommendations and online research and rankings. I came up with 15 VC firms from US and 15 VC firms from China, not in a particular order:
US VCs: Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital, Founders Fund, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Union Square Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Index Ventures, Softbank Vision Fund, Khosla Ventures, Floodgate, Accel, Benchmark, A16Z, Greylock, Bessemer Venture Partners
Chinese VCs: Sequoia Capital China, Morningside Venture Capital, Shunwei Capital, Gaorong Capital, Legend Capital, Qiming Venture Partners, Matrix Partners China, IDG Capital, Hillhouse Capital Group, GGV Capital, Source Code Capital, Shenzhen Capital Group, ZhenFund, GSR Ventures, DCM Ventures
(Please don't be offended if your VC is not on this list, this is not a comprehensive list!)
These VCs are generally the same size, with occasional outliers like Softbank Vision Fund, which invests in later stages with huge checks and ZhenFund, which invests in very early stages with smaller checks. Also, DCM Ventures is technically in both the US and China, but I listed it as a Chinese VC in this dataset.
Then, I went to Crunchbase and got all the investment announcements of these VCs from Jan 20, 2020 till when I got the data, July 27, 2020.
Who are the most active US and Chinese investors?
The bar plot shows the number of investments made by top US VCs, top Chinese VCs, and both in comparison.
The most active US VCs since 01-20-20 have been Accel, A16Z, Lightspeed, Sequoia, etc.
And the least active US VCs since 01-20-20 have been Benchmark, Floodgate, Greylock, Softbank, etc.
